The local Butchulla people call Fraser Island K’gari, which means paradise, and you’ll find out why soon enough, on a 5-day tour that shows off all the highlights of this World Heritage-protected place. The largest sand island in the world, Fraser Island is home to ancient rainforest, sweeping sand dunes and some of the purest water anywhere on earth, just waiting for you to take a refreshing dip. With the expertise of a local leader, a few nights of camping under the stars, and lots of time to relax and soak up the rays of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, this is a true island life adventure.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Rainbow Beach
Welcome to the Sunshine Coast! Today is a free day before your 4pm group meeting, so feel free to arrive into Rainbow Beach at your leisure – we can arrange for airport pick-up if you need. If your travels have you arriving early in the day, take the time to explore this delightful coastal town. Wander the main street or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, head out to Carlo Sandblow, a unique sand mass that feels a bit like you’ve landed on the moon. After your group meeting this evening, you may want to head out with your travel mates for a dinner of locally caught seafood or maybe a beer at the local surf club.

      Day 2: Fraser Island
It’s a short 10-minute drive to the ferry that will transport you across the water to the stunning Fraser Island (a 10-minute crossing). Once you’ve arrived on the world’s largest sand island, take a 4WD drive along 75 Mile Beach – Fraser Island’s own “highway” complete with speed limits. Enjoy morning tea on the beach before your adventure really begins, with a drive to the famous Lake McKenzie, one of the most popular and picturesque highlights of Fraser. Stop for lunch here, with some free time to relax on the white sand beach or swim in the lake’s amazingly clear waters. Fun fact: because Lake McKenzie sits above the water table, it is comprised entirely of rainwater and is too pure for the typical plants and fish you’d find in most lakes. Head onwards to the ancient rainforest-surrounded Central Station, Wanggoolba Creek and Pile Valley before driving up to your campground accommodation. Settle in for an early dinner and some well-deserved drinks.

Travelling north, stop at the Maheno Shipwreck for a photo opportunity and a short history lesson about this famous Fraser Island icon, before continuing on to Indian Head, Fraser Island’s highest point. While climbing the headland is forbidden, you may be lucky enough to see whales and sharks in the ocean before travelling to the delightful Champagne Pools for a dip. Lunch is served at either the Maheno Shipwreck or the Champagne Pools, depending on time constraints and tidal safety. In the afternoon, travel back to your campground for dinner and drinks.

Share your experience with us at: http://www.intrepidtravel.com/feedback/ -- FOOD AND DIETARY REQUIREMENTS -- While travelling with us you'll experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Your group leader will be able to suggest restaurants to try during your trip. To give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, generally not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let your booking agent know prior to departure. DIETARY REQUIREMENTS Australia eats multi-culturally. Everything from meat pies to ramen, tacos, curries, rice and pasta are part of the national diet. Vegetarians and vegans are well catered for in Australia and most restaurants and cafes will have a good selection of vegetarian meals. Gluten and lactose free diets are also well catered for. -- ACCOMMODATION -- Hostel (multi-share with shared facilities) (2 nights) Camping (with basic facilities) (2 nights) Please note that this is a participatory trip. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and help out with camp activities like food preparation and washing up. It’s all about giving a hand. Tents on Fraser Island are twin share and will already be set up for you. Camping gear (sleeping bag, sleeping mat and pillows) are all provided. Campground facilities include flushing toilets and coin-operated showers (at a minimal extra cost to encourage water conservation - please bring $2 coins for this purpose). In Rainbow Beach accommodation is in simple dormitory style multi-share hostel rooms, perfect for travellers on a budget. -- TRANSPORT -- Private Vehicle Ferry 4WD -- PACKING -- Below are some essential items for this trip. Please review the ‘Climate and Seasonal Information’ to ensure you pack appropriately for the weather at the time of year you are travelling. - Lightweight clothing. You will need to bring a mixture of lightweight clothing and layers. Long shirts and pants are useful to protect against the harsh Australian sun. Clothes should be easy to wash and dry. Maybe bring a change of smart clothes for dinner in larger cities. Australia is pretty casual, shorts or a skirt and a top, with sandals, is our usual warm weather wardrobe. - Comfortable, closed-in shoes. These will help to protect your feet from cuts and scratches when walking through bush/grasslands and will act as a protective barrier in the rare case of a bite or sting. A pair of sandals or thongs/flip flops are great for the beach. - Sun protection. Wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses. VALUABLES Try to avoid bringing unnecessary valuables. It’s also a good idea to purchase a money belt or pouch that is easily hidden. We strongly recommend that you photocopy all important documents e.g. air tickets, passport, vaccination certificate, etc. and keep the copies separate from the originals. While not valid, a photocopy makes it much easier to obtain replacements if necessary. OTHER SUGGESTED ITEMS - Swimwear and towel for those wishing to swim - Refillable water bottle - $2 coins for the showers while camping MORE! If you need some further tips for packing, you can always check out our ultimate packing list. https://www.intrepidtravel.com/packing-list -- CLIMATE AND SEASONAL INFORMATION -- EAST COAST WEATHER Australia’s east coast, from Sydney to Cairns, experiences a variety of weather and temperatures throughout the year. In Australia your group leader is also your driver, taking you from start to finish. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, as well as recommend great local eating venues. They will also introduce you to our local friends along the way. -- SAFETY -- https://www.intrepidtravel.com/safety-guidelines BEACH SAFETY Rip currents are the leading surf hazard for all beach users. They can occur at any beach and can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea. Rip currents are responsible for around 15,000 beach rescues each year in Australia. To enjoy Australia's beaches safely, take the following simple precautions: - Always swim between the red and yellow flags. These indicate that it is a supervised location where a lifesaving service is currently on duty. - Do not swim at unsupervised locations. - Observe and obey safety signage, which indicates current and typical hazards for that location. - Ask a lifeguard or lifesaver for advice on conditions. They are there to make your experience safer and more enjoyable. - Always swim with a friend – never swim alone. - If you get into trouble, stay calm and signal for help by calling and waving your arm above your head. - Be aware of your own limitations in terms of your physical health and your swimming ability in the given conditions. Never swim while, or after, consuming alcohol. -- A COUPLE OF RULES -- Everyone has the right to feel safe when they travel. We don’t tolerate any form of violence (verbal or physical) or sexual harassment, either between customers or involving our leaders, partners or local people. Sexual relationships between a tour leader and a customer are strictly forbidden. Use or possession of illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. If you choose to consume alcohol while travelling, we encourage responsible drinking and expect that you’ll abide by the local laws regarding alcohol consumption. The sex tourism industry is known to exploit vulnerable people and have negative consequences on communities, including undermining the development of sustainable tourism. For this reason, patronising sex workers will not be tolerated on our trips. By travelling with us you are agreeing to adhere to these rules. You must at all times comply with the laws, customs, foreign exchange and drug regulations of all countries visited, and you also agree to travel in accordance with our Responsible Travel Guidelines. The decision of the group leader is final on all matters likely to affect the safety or well-being of any traveller or staff member participating in the trip. If you fail to comply with a decision made by a group leader, or interfere with the well-being or mobility of the group, the group leader may direct you to leave the trip immediately, with no right of refund. We may also elect not to carry you on any future trips booked. If you feel that someone is behaving inappropriately while travelling with us, please inform your tour leader or local guide immediately. Alternatively, contact us on the emergency contact number detailed in the Problems and Emergency Contact section of this Essential Trip Information. For additional Conditions of Carriage regarding COVID-19, see here: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/conditions-carriage -- TRAVELLING IN A GROUP -- As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group - patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure. SOLO TRAVELLERS This is the beauty of our style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per your passport or the information we have in our booking system, so if you identify differently from the gender marker on your passport, please let us know in advance. We also have a Single Supplement available on most trips for travellers who prefer to have their own room. Please note that this only applies to accommodation during the tour. Pre-trip and post-trip accommodation booked through us will on a single room basis. Some of our itineraries have accommodation booked on an open gender, multi-share basis and where applicable this will be specified in our Essential Trip Information. -- TRAVEL INSURANCE -- Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips for those travelling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. If you are travelling within your home country or region please confirm before travel that you are entitled to access the public medical system easily should an accident occur. We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number has been sighted by your leader. If you have credit card insurance your group leader will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country. Travellers who reside within the European Union or Switzerland receive basic international health insurance, so travel insurance is not mandatory under European Union Law. However, as this does not cover situations such as emergency rescues, private health care, or repatriation to their home country, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. European Union or Swiss travellers who decline travel insurance when travelling outside of their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting. For assistance with travel insurance or other services, please visit the link below: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/booking-resources/our-services AUSTRALIAN TRAVELLERS Australians travelling within Australia are not required to be covered for hospital care due to being covered by Medicare. However, we strongly recommend that Australians have a domestic travel insurance policy which covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. It is also strongly advisable that Australians have current ambulance cover in the case of emergency evacuation or incidents requiring ambulance transportation.
